Join us for an interactive webinar that delves into the real-world scenario of an adolescent suspected of sustaining a concussion during play. Drawing from the latest evidence and practice guidelines, including the most recent sport consensus statement, this session will provide participants with a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to the assessment, diagnosis, and management of concussions in the adolescent population. Through a case-based format, attendees will gain practical insights and actionable strategies to enhance their clinical practice.

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key signs and symptoms of concussion in adolescents and adults, differentiating them from other potential injuries.
  • Apply evidence-based assessment techniques to diagnose concussions in adolescents and adults, utilizing tools from the latest sport consensus statement.
  • Formulate an effective management plan for adolescents and adults with concussions, ensuring a safe and gradual return to learn and play.
  • Recognize the potential complications and long-term implications of concussions in the adolescent and adult population, and the importance of timely intervention.

Instructors

Dr. Carol Cancelliere, BSc (Hons), DC, MPH, PhD

Dr. Carol Cancelliere is a scientist within the Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (IDRR) at Ontario Tech University and the project lead for the Canadian Chiropractic Guideline Initiative (CCGI). The objectives of this program are to develop, adopt or adapt clinical practice guidelines relevant to musculoskeletal health and disability, and engage in knowledge translation activities and research. She completed a Bachelor of Science degree (Honours) at the University of Toronto (2000), a Doctor of Chiropractic degree at CMCC (2004), a Master's of Public Health degree at Lakehead University (2011), and a PhD in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research at the University of Toronto (2017). She also practiced chiropractic for several years in Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Ontario, Canada.

Dr. Scott D. Howitt, BA, MSc, RKin, DC, FRCCSS(C), FCCPOR

Sports and Rehabilitation Specialist Chiropractor

Dr. Howitt holds an Honors Baccalaureate degree in Physical Education from the University of Western Ontario and a Masters degree in Human Health and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Guelph. He graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, and completed a two-year post-graduate residency in Sports Sciences, a three-year post-graduate program in Rehabilitative Sciences, and a two-year course in acupuncture. Dr. Howitt was a member of the core medical team for the 2015 Canadian Pan Am team and works with various amateur and professional sports including the Men’s National Soccer team. Dr. Howitt has a special interest in endurance athlete performance and co-ordinates the medical coverage for the Toronto Triathlon Festival. He has created content for sports medicine courseware, has published numerous research papers, and is a lecturer for undergraduate and post-graduate sports medicine, rehabilitation, nutrition, and fitness. Dr. Howitt is the Past-President of the RCCSS(C), and the Co-Chair for the National Advisory Council of EIMC.

Dr. Crystal Draper, BAS, DC

CCA Senior Manager of Professional Practice

Dr. Draper is the Senior Manager of Professional Practice at the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA). She holds a Bachelor of Arts and Science Degree in Human Kinetics and Developmental Psychology from the University of Guelph and is a graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC). In addition to her work at the CCA, she practices downtown Toronto at a family-based interdisciplinary clinic, focusing on pregnancy and postpartum care. Before joining the CCA, Dr. Draper was a faculty member and course coordinator for Clinical Diagnosis and Female Care and taught within the Chiropractic Techniques and Chiropractic Principles departments at CMCC. She has a number of peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented research at various conferences.
